Stress and deformation sensors for machine tools or parts

The device has one or more sensors (10) placed within recesses (12) of a machined component (14), so that the sensor (10) is sensitive to the force felt by the bottom surface (16) or a part of the surface into which the recess is machined. The sensor (10) is positioned where the expected deformation of the component takes place. With sufficient sensors a three dimensional deflection may be measured. A sensor matrix can be set up. Preferably the sensors will be piezoelectric elements glued to the surface of the component and covered with an isolating ceramic protective coating.
