The invention relates to cyanine, merocyanine or rhodacyanine dyes containing at least two heterocyclic nuclei linked together by a methine radical or a methine chain characterized in that at least one of said nuclei is a 6,7-dimethyl quinoline nucleus. The dyes are obtained by the usual condensation reactions from 4,6,7-trimethyl quinoline iodoethylate and 6,7 - dimethyl - 2 - ethylmercapto quinoline iodoethylate. Specified dyes are 11,3-diethyl-5 -iodo - 61,71 - dimethylthia - pseudo cyanine iodide, 11,3 - diethyl - 61,71 - dimethyl - naphthothia - 41 - carbocyanine iodide, 11 - ethyl - 3 - beta - ethoxyethyl - 61,71 - dimethyl thiapseudo cyanine iodide, 11-(diethyl carbamyl methyl) - 61,71 - dimethyl - 3 - ethyl thia - 41 -carbocyanine iodide, 11,3 - diethyl - 5 - bromo - 61, 71-dimethyl selena pseudo cyanine, 3-allyl-5-(11 - ethyl - 61,71 - dimethyl - quinolylidene - (4) - ethylidene) and 2-(51,61-dimethyl-benzoxazolyl-(2) - methylene) - (111 - ethyl - 611,711 - dimethyl - quinolylidene - (4)) iodoethylate.ALSO:4,6,7-Trimethyl quinoline is prepared by reacting 3,4-dimethyl-aniline hydrochloride with methyl-vinyl-ketene in the presence of ferric chloride and zinc chloride in ethanol and this may be converted to the iodoethylate with ethyl iodide. 6,7-Dimethyl-1-ethyl-2-thioquinolone is prepared by reacting 6,7-dimethyl-quinoline with diethyl sulphate and then potassium ferricyanide and the thus produced 2-quinolone converted to 2-thioquinolone with phosphorus pentasulphide and this may be converted to 6,7-dimethyl -2-ethylmercapto quinoline iodoethylate with ethyl iodide. |
