It comprises at least one work unit (22) with a rotary tool (24) for machining a workpiece (26) arranged in a machining zone (28). The workpiece (26) is secured to a workpiece carrier (15), which for this purpose possesses a holding device (25). The workpiece carrier (15) may be moved into a workpiece change station (25), wherein workpiece change may take place. During workpiece change the workpieces (26) are picked up and put down from above by the holding device (25). During machining the workpiece (26) is hangingly held on the workpiece carrier (15). The machining center ensures high productivity and minimum complexity for operation.
