Apparatus for the production of first copy sheets e.g. cards 64, carrying printed and machine readable data together with second copy sheets e.g. cards 77, carrying the machine readable data of the first copy sheets comprises a printing arrangement e.g. a rotary duplicator 70, the printing being effected line by line by the corresponding control of the printing arrangement, sensing means 72 which produces pulses corresponding to machine readable characters on a record carrier 73, a first recording mechanism e.g. a punching device I adapted to produce machine readable characters on a card 64 received from the printing arrangement, and a second recording mechanism e.g. a punching device II to produce machine readable characters on a card 77, the sensing means being arranged to feed pulses to the punching devices I and II and means for effecting relative transport between the sensing means and the record carrier. The cards 64 are printed in the duplicator 70 and then fed to a receiving station 71 from which they are transported to the punching device I. The transport device comprises a frame 372, Fig. 4, housing gears 375 to 381, the gears 380 co-operating with a stationary rack 385. The gear 381 engages with a rack 393 movably mounted on rails 405 to 408, the rack supporting a card pusher 398. The gear 374 engages with a rack 394 which is connected to a pawl 395 by means of a rod 396. Upon rotation of a crank-and-link mechanism 371, 373 the frame is moved thereby causing the rack to move in a direction E, Fig. 4, together with a card 64a. The rack 394 moves in an opposite direction F so that at a certain point, the pawl 395 engages behind the rear edge of the card. During the return movement of the frame the rack 394 is continued to be moved in the direction E by means of a spring-loaded gear device 382, 389, 392 driving the gear 374, the card thereby being moved into the zone of the punching device I. The transport device for the cards 77 is similar to that described above except that the cards 77 are fed from a hopper (90), Fig. 6 (not shown). The punching devices I and II comprise a number of interposer rods 114, Fig. 7, each having an intermediate member 130 movable above a row of spring-loaded punches 132 by means of cam-operated levers 109 and a pawl device 121, 114. The punches are selected by means of pawls 127 adapted to engage in a selected detent 129 formed in the interposer rod, the pawls being actuated by solenoids 123 upon an impulse being received from the sensing device 72. The selected punches are actuated by a pressure plate 134 acting through the intermediate members 130. The interposers are returned to their initial position shown in Fig. 7 by means of the pawls 121 reengaging in their detents during the continuous movement of the cam-and-lever mechanism 106, 109. After the cards 77 have been punched they are -transported to a container (140), Fig. 8 (not shown), by a roller feed mechanism 143, 149. |
