In a method of moulding an article such as a tumbler from a thermoplastic material containing fibrous matter, one element of the mould is rotated and/or oscillated until the material solidifies, whereby multi-directional orientation is imparted to the article. A number of examples of suitable thermoplastic and fibrous materials are given. The invention may be applied to injection moulding, impact moulding or blowmoulding. In an example an injection moulding machine with a rotatable mandrel is used, the mandrel being rotated during injection and for a controlled length of time after the mould is full. The fill point is determined by a thermistor. In the case of blow-moulding. molecular orientation is imparted to a parison cup prior to the blowing step. |
