A shifting apparatus for use on a bicycle for shifting a change speed device through a control cable (15). The shifting apparatus includes a support shaft (8) attachable to a bicycle body (1), a takeup element (9) rotatably supported by the support shaft (8) for winding and unwinding the control cable (15), shift levers (4,5) for rotating the takeup element (9), and a lock mechanism (20) for maintaining the takeup element (9) in a selected position. The takeup element (9) includes a takeup portion supported adjacent one end (8a) of the support shaft (8), and a wall (9c) extending from the takeup portion toward the other end (8d) of the support shaft (8). The wall (9c) defines, in combination with the takeup portion, an accommodating space (9a) opening toward the other end (8d) for accommodating the lock mechanism (20). One of the shift levers (4,5) has a proximal portion (4a,5a) disposed between the wall (9c) and the other end (8d) of the support shaft (8) and covering the accommodating space (9a) from the other end (8d) of the support shaft (8).
