A screen for separating particulate materials from a liquid comprises a pattern of varying length slot-shaped openings (21,24,26) separated by walls for the liquid. The pattern comprises first pattern elements (20) having three groups (22,23,25) of openings of the same orientation within a group but different from that of the other groups. A group of openings, having a certain orientation within the first pattern element, are adjacent to a neighbouring pattern element group of a different orientation. Also claimed is the assembly of a screen being (a) a support screen; (b) screens around which the groups are arranged in circular openings; and (c) screens having one or more groups of openings having further orientation(s).
