An alkaline storage battery provided with a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an alkaline electrolytic solution in a battery can, wherein the occurrence of oxygen from the positive electrode is suppressed at the time of charging the battery, by making the difference between the charged potential and the oxygen generating potential at the positive electrode larger by using .alpha.-nickel hydroxide containing manganese as the positive electrode active material in the positive electrode and, at the same time, the capacity of the battery is increased by increasing the volume occupying the positive and the negative electrode active materials to the rate not less than 75 % in the battery can.
