The present invention relates to channel mediating substrates and particularly to a method for screening novel drug molecules and to a pharmaceutical composition for treatment of disease mediated by reactive oxygen species (ROS) or by a lack of response to ROS. The method for screening drug molecules comprise a) selecting a cell or cell culture type known to respond to oxidative stress and/or ROS by opening an NSNAD channel, b) adding a cell-death monitoring composition to said culture, and c) adding thereto a channel protective structure(s) for the protection thereof from the effects of ROS and cell depolarisation; thereby to establish the channel antagonist status of the channel protective structure.
