PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically measure the upper level of a material fluctuating in water level, from a position separated from a scale. SOLUTION: Each of scale lines of a scale 4 is formed of a bar code symbol 5, and the character of the bar code symbol 5 is formed of a bar code showing a numerical value for identifying the scale line position of the scale 4, whereby the scale 4 having the bar code symbols 5 arranged with a prescribed arrangement regulation is provided. The scale 4 is set in a level measuring position and image-picked up by a television camera 6, the readable numerical value of the bar code symbol in the bottom part and the numerical values of the bar code symbols arranged successively above it are determined from the taken image information, the numerical value constitution and arrangement order are calibrated by the arrangement regulation, and the position of the bar code symbol in the bottom end satisfying the calibration is taken as the position of a level 19, whereby the image information processing for providing a level value is performed. |
