The invention relates to a process of producing 1-chloro-3-methoxybenzene by methylating 1-chloro-3-hydroxybenzene with dimethylsulphate in the presence of sodium hydroxyde, which consists in carrying out the methylation in aqueous sodium hydroxide solution and isolating the reaction product by extraction with benzene or toluen, followed by distilling the same under vacuum.
