<p>Autoantigens with immunocryptic sites may be cleaved at particular sites in the presence of metals such as iron or copper and reactive oxygen species to produce antigenic protein fragments which are useful in diagnosing autoimmune diseases. Substances that interfere with fragmentation process may be used to treat autoimmune diseases and the fragments may be used to tolerize patients. Non-enzymatic proteolysis according to the invention has wide applicability as a biochemical tool.</p> |
