摘要 1315940 Carbon fibres, filaments or films COAL INDUSTRY (PATENTS) Ltd 25 Aug 1970 [27 Aug 1969] 42675/69 Heading CIA Fibres, filaments or films consisting of carbon are produced by spinning or extruding a solution or extract of coal to form the desired shape, oxidizing the extruded or spun material so that it is rendered stable to heat treatment, and carbonizing the so stabilized material to give the desired product. The solution or extract of coal may be made using a solvent containing at least one aromatic ring and boiling above 200‹ C., for example a polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon. The coal may contain between 80 and 90% by wt. of carbon, and the solution or extract may contain between 40 and 60% by wt. of solvent. The solution or extract may be melt spun to form the fibre or filament. The fibre, filament or film may be drawn or stretched whilst being extruded or spun or at some point between completion of spinning and winding on to a receiving roll. The oxidation step may be achieved using a gas containing oxygen molecules at an elevated temperature, which molecules may be ozone molecules. The preferred gas used is air. The oxidation step may be performed under tension. The carbonization temperature may be between 800‹ and 3000‹ C. The process may be performed continuously by extruding the film, filament or fibre at 100‹ C. for example and passing the product directly into a furnace having suitable atmospheres and temperature gradient. The fibres produced may be used to reinforce a polymer e.g. epoxy resin matrix.
