Fatty acids of formula (I): (where R is >=5C alkyl opt. substd. by >=1 alkoxy gp.; R1 is lower alkyl), are prepd. by reacting an acid (II): or its ammonium salt with a titanate (R1O)4Ti, there being >=0.75 moles of titanate per mole of acid or its ammonium salt. The process is partic. advantageous for the prepn. of esters of conjugated unsatd. acids, which are often difficult to obtain by alternative routes.
