PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject derivative useful as an additive for a resin to impart the resin with a high flame-retardancy and processability while keeping the strength of the resin by brominating an oligomer derivative produced by the homopolymerization or copolymerization ofα-methylstyrene with a bromination agent. SOLUTION: Anα-methylstyrene oligomer produced by the homopolymerization of anα-methylstyrene monomer derivative of the formula I (R is a 1-4C alkyl) (e.g. p-methyl-α-methylstyrene) or the copolymerization of theα-methylstyrene monomer derivative of the formula I andα-methylstyrene monomer is brominated with a bromination reagent (e.g. bromine chloride) to obtain the objective derivative composed exclusively of the structural unit of the formula II ((a) is an integer of 1-4) or structural units of the formula II and the formula III ((b) is an integer of 1-5), having a weight-average molecular weight of 200-10,000 in terms of polystyrene, having white color and useful as an additive for a resin to impart the resin with good flame-retardancy and processability without changing the color of the resin.
