PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject suppressing agent having excellent NF-κB activation suppressing effect and useful as a gene expression controlling agent, anti- AIDS virus agent, etc., by using a specific lignan as an active component. SOLUTION: A lignan expressed by the formula (R<1> to R<4> are each H, hydroxy, an alkyl, a hydroxyalkyl, or an alkoxy) is used as an active component. The lignan can be produced e.g. by extracting hiba arborvitae or its dried powder with ethanol, etc., at about 3-70 deg.C. In the case of oral administration for adult, the suppressing agent is administered at a rate of 0.1-2,000mg per dose and one to several doses a day.
