Metal components, esp. Ni and Co, are recovered from laterite or similar materials with total removal of iron, by (a) dividing the laterite into a smaller fraction and a larger fraction, (b) treating the smaller fraction with hydrochloric acid to form a suspension in which the iron of the laterite is converted to ferric chloride, (c) mixing the larger fraction with this suspension to produce a homogeneous mass, (d) treating this mass at an elevated temp. so that chlorides of Ni and Co are formed and HCl gas escapes, (e) recycling the HCl gas for use in stage (b), (f) treating the residue with water so that the chlorides of nickel and cobalt dissolve to form a first soln., and the iron remains wholly in the residue, and (g) recovering the metal components from the first soln.
|
