The cushion has a filling made from plant seeds which have been irradiated with gamma rays emitted by a radio isotope such as cobalt 60, caesium 137 or electron beams to render them sterile and kill off any spiders or insects, eggs or larvae, mould spores, bacteria or micro-organisms. The irradiation can be carried out on the seeds after they have been packed into sealed bags ready for sale. The bags should be of film at least 0.06 mm thick to prevent re-contamination, and radiation dose needed to prevent germination is 16 KGy, which is sufficient to kill any pests or diseases. The seeds can be rehumidified prior to use to give a moisture content of between 14 and 55 per cent, immersing the seeds for at least 30 sec in water containing a fungicide, based e.g. on iodine or iodide, heterocyclic or quaternary ammonium derivatives.
