A hydrotreating catalyst for heavy hydrocarbon oils which comprises a Group VI metal carried on an alumina support containing boron in an amount of 1 to 12 wt.% in terms of boron oxide based on the catalyst. It has an average pore diameter of 19 to 25 nm, a pore volume of 0.65 to 0.8 ml/g, a strength of 3 lb/mm or higher, and a specific surface area of 70 to 130 m2/g; and a method for hydrotreating a heavy hydrocarbon oil characterized by reacting the oil in the presence of the hydrotreating catalyst under the conditions of a temperature of 300 to 500 °C, a pressure of 3 to 20 MPa, a hydrogen to oil ratio of 400 to 3,000 Nl/l, and an LHSV of 0.1 to 1.5 h-1.
|
