<p>The method involves monitoring input speed and torque to the gearbox and matching it to the requirements for changing gear. To alter the output of the engine a variable setting flap in the exhaust duct acts as an exhaust brake. The engine timing is varied to change torque and crankshaft speed and selective braking can be applied to the power train. The control braking can be applied using an eddy current brake, or retarder. Accessories can be coupled to the power train to take some of the torque. The timing of the inlet and outlet valves can be set to outside the normal operating range to reduce torque.</p>
