Process and apparatus for purifying a gas containing hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide

A method for the purification of gas containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide comprises contacting the gas mixture containing hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide in presence of an alkaline compound soluble in a solvent. The contacting is carried out at co-current of the gas and the liquid. The device (figure 2) for fabricating elemental sulphur by reaction of H2S and SO2 in the liquid reaction mixture comprises: a vertical reactor (2) containing a lagging (2a) inlet (3) for the gas mixture at the upper limit of the reactor outlet (7) for the residual gas mixture at the lower limit of the reactor withdrawing means (1) of the liquid reaction medium separating means (9,13) and recovering of liquid sulphur and recycling means (4, 14) of the liquid reaction medium at the upper limit of the lagging (2a) linked to a withdrawing unit (1) means of indirect heat exchange (10) connected to recycling means (4, 14).
