The regulator has a control circuit and a power circuit (13) connected with an external computer (15) to control the voltage delivered by an alternator to charge a battery. The external computer transmits different regulation parameters to the control circuit. The power circuit generates an excitation signal when the external computer delivers a suitable command. The control circuit is actuated to emit an excitation signal only when it is detected that the alternator has started to rotate to ensure correct starting of the circuit.
