<p>The starting material is melted in a controlled atmosphere, the partial pressure of at least one of the gases likely to be evolved by the material being maintained at a pressure of at least equal to the dissociation pressure. The melt is then divided into droplets which are expanded by contacting with an atmosphere of compsn. favouring the dissociation pref. air, and the granules are then cooled. Pref. the material is melted in a crucible of non-wettable carbonaceous material esp. graphite, and partial pressure of CO is controlled. Partial pressure of SO2 or CO2 may also be controlled during melting. Expanded granules are used in concrete prodn.</p> |
