METHOD FOR CATALYTICALLY DECOMPOSING DICHLORODIFLUOROMETHANE REFRIGERANT

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To catalytically decompose CFC-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) as a chlorofluorocarbon for a refrigerant having a high coefft. of destruction of ozonosphere without producing lower monohaloalkyl and CFC-13 as by-products causing secondary environmental pollution. SOLUTION: A dichlorodifluoromethane refrigerant is catalytically decomposed by treatment in the presence of aliphatic lower alcohol and a binary catalyst consisting of ferric fluoride and/or ferric chloride as a main catalyst and cupric fluoride and/or cupric chloride as a promoter at a temp. at which the amt. of lower monohaloalkyl corresponding to the aliphatic lower alcohol in the resultant decomposed product is reduced to the allowable level or below.
