The invention concerns an electric arc generator with an inverter and a three-phase supply, comprising three inverters (16A, 16B, 16C) and, for each inverter, its own circuit (14A, 14B, 14C) for rectifying the supply voltage of the inverter (16A, 16B, 16C). Each rectifying circuit (14A, 14B, 14C) is supplied by a different phase (12A, 12B, 12C) of a three-phase supply network. The outputs (34A, 34B, 34C; 38A, 38B, 38C) of the inverters are combined for delivering simultaneously to an output (22) of the generator an electric power adapted for supplying a device (24) generating an electric arc. It further comprises switching means (18) selectively providing the connection of the three rectifying circuits (14A, 14B, 14C) to the three-phase supply network along a star-shaped or triangular arrangement. The invention is applicable to generators of electric welding or cutting.
