The method enables the verification of a sample signature by means of a reference signature, whereby both signatures have a stroke structure consisting of at least one stroke. By this method, even unintentional rises and falls of the pen during signing in comparison with the reference signature can be correctly interpreted, in that strokes on the tablet surface of an electromagnetic tablet and strokes above the tablet surface are taken into account. Length relationships between sample strokes and reference strokes, and different interval measures in the case of the omission of a stroke, an additional stroke, in the case of varying stroke structure or a 1:1 correspondence, are calculated by means of a connection rule. Contraction rules in the connection rule allow to investigate whether or not a too long stringing together of strokes is being selected. The decision for a correspondence alternative is made by a minimum rule, which picks out the most probable correspondence.
