The equipment has a sensor (76) which produces a signal dependant on the position of a movable part (80) of a valve controlling the flow rate of a liquid or powder coating material applied from a spray gun (2). The signal is either transmitted directly or converted in the sensor and passed over a route to a signal processing unit. In this unit, a comparison is made between target and actual values in order to initiate automatic corrective measures. Preferably the movable valve part is a valve needle which moves within a fixed valve part (92), actuated by a mechanism (82) with a pneumatically operated piston (84) mounted in the spray gun.
