PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process capable of industrially producing a carbonic acid by a non-phosgene method, by solving problems in a method for producing a carbonic acid diaryl ester by a known phosgene method or non-phosgene method. SOLUTION: This method for producing a carbonic acid diaryl ester comprises a first process for reacting carbon monoxide with a nitrous acid alkyl ester and/or a lower alcohol to form an oxalic acid dialkyl ester, a second process for reacting the oxalic acid dialkyl ester with a phenol compound to form an oxalic acid diaryl ester and a third process for eliminating CO from the oxalic acid diaryl ester to form a carbonic acid diaryl ester and carbon monoxide.
