The conveyor which suspends loads from individual carriages comprises an endless belt (2) whose upper strand (2a) forms a track for the carriage rollers. The endless belt upper strand progresses in the direction of transport (F) to advance the carriages. A set of n retractable stops (41,.4n), operating in cascade, are provided along the conveyor from row 1 to n in the downstream to upstream direction. These cause a carriage to be stopped by a stop of row i. The stop of row (i +1) is in the closed position and the restarting of the carriage freed by the stop of row i and driven by the endless belt assures retraction of the stop of row (i + 1). The first stop (41) at the downstream end is controlled to open and close in order to control the exit of the carriages.
