1282837 Moulding powder; glycidyl methacrylate copolymers FORD MOTOR CO 17 May 1971 [5 June 1970] 15257/71 Headings C3B and C3P A thermosetting moulding powder comprises : (A) a copolymer of (I) glycidyl methacrylate, (II) methyl methacrylate and (III) acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile, and (B) a dihydric phenol as curing agent. (A) may contain 15-35% by wt. of I, 10-30% by wt. of III and 35-75% by wt. of II. A minor portion of II may be replaced by another ethylenically unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, vinyl acetate or an ester of (meth)acrylic acid with a C 2 -C 4 alkanol. (A) may have a M.W. of 1500- 1600, a softening point of 50-130‹ C. and may be prepared by solution or emulsion polymerization. Examples of (B) are bisphenol A, 2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene, 4,41 - sulphonyldiphenol, 1,1<SP>1</SP> - bis - (4- hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane, 0,0<SP>1</SP> - bisphenol, bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl)methane and hydroquinone. (B) may be used so as to provide 0À90- 1-05 hydroxyl groups per epoxy group of (A). The composition may additionally contain a curing catalyst, e.g. a tertiary amine, a reactive diluent, e.g. a liquid polyepoxide and a non- reactive diluent, e.g. isopropyl azelate or dioctyl phthalate. The copolymer A is suitably prepared by solution polymerization (e.g. in toluene) in the presence of an initiator (e.g. azobis-2-methylpropionitrile).
