The operating mechanism (54), for a sewing machine presser foot assembly (53) has a compressed air piston/cylinder drive (32), with a drilling (17) as a passage for the presser foot rod (18). The piston/cylinder drive (32) is supported in a mounting at the sewing machine (1) housing (6) mounting (13) for the presser foot rod and the carrier (35). Preferably the piston/cylinder drive (32) applies the counter force (F2) along the longitudinal axis (22) against the spring (40). The piston (14) or the cylinder of the piston/cylinder drive (32) is at the mounting (13). The carrier (35) has a clamp (33) and an arm (36), riding with play in a guide (38) parallel to the longitudinal axis (22) of the presser foot rod (18), at the sewing machine (1) housing (6). The spring (40) acts on the carrier (35) at one side and a support (41) at the other side which is held at the housing (6) by a set screw (42) within a further set screw (45) which positions the limit stop surface (50) to determine the stroke length of the piston/cylinder drive (32) movement. The second set screw (45) has a tube (49) forming the limit stop surface (50).
