PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow some change of the number of syllables to absorb the individual difference of imitation sound expressions and to retrieve a wide range of tones by retrieving the sounds based on a new character string that is produced by a minus-one retrieval means by deleting one character from an input character string. SOLUTION: A minus-one retrieval means 23 includes an imitation sound word minus-one conversion means, a 2nd complete coincidence retrieval means and a 2nd partial coincidence retrieval means. The imitation sound word minus-one conversion means deletes one KANA (Japanese syllabary) character from a character stringϕto produce a new character stringϕ'. The 2nd complete coincidence retrieval means retrieves whether a character string that is exactly coincident with the character stringϕ' is detected at the imitation sound word level of a sound data base storage part 31. Then the 2nd partial coincidence retrieval means retrieves whether a character string including the character stringϕ' is detected at the imitation sound word level of the part 31. Thus, the means 23 deletes one character from a character string to produce a new character string and performs the complete coincidence retrieval and the partial coincidence retrieval based on the new character string.
