The waste (1) is mixed with water, and preferably sprayed (8) with water. The organically laden water (9) is separated and the sediment (18) dried. The drying of the waste takes place in a closed container (22) under forced aeration, and/or in a drying chamber (23). Before mixing or spraying with water the waste is reduced in size and/or sieved, and afterwards is compressed (19).
