A nucleic acid (I) codes for an interleukin-16 (IL-16) polypeptide which may be expressed in prokaryotic or eukaryotic cells and comprises the 117 amino acid sequence given below or a sequence derived from this that may be truncated by up to 8 amino acids at the C terminus.
