The method involves measuring traffic data at several locations of a traffic network. A section of a three lane motorway (AF) has a number of sensor stations (Q1-Q8) between bridges (AK1,AK2) in the form of inductive loops. The sensors are coupled to a central control station and the conditions for each lane are evaluated using algorithms that use rates of travel and spacing. Any developing traffic jam situation can be identified.
