PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new process for the production of coiled metal nitride fiber and nitride-based fiber. SOLUTION: This process for the production of a coiled metal nitride fiber comprises the simultaneous high-temperature gaseous phase metallizing and nitriding treatment of a coiled carbon fiber in a mixture of a gas containing a metal component and a gas containing nitrogen atom or the high-temperature gaseous phase nitriding treatment of a coiled metal carbide fiber in a gas containing nitrogen atom at 700-1,500 deg.C.
