An elevator system comprises an elevator frame 43 vertically movable in a hoistway 43H, a cab 13 mounted on a wheeled carriage 15 and a wheeled bogey 28 adapted to move along tracks 29 on a landing 36. A pair of rails 40 are mounted on the elevator frame to extend substantially across the hoistway, the rails spaced to cooperate with the wheeled carriage. A similar pair of rails 26 having the same spacing are mounted on the bogey. The wheeled carriage has a pair of wheels 20 at each corner. The ends of the rails are scarfed(127, Fig. 2; 132, Fig. 3) in a complementary fashion so as to provide a temporary half-lap joint between the rails of the bogey 26 and the rails of the elevator frame 40 when the two are aligned adjacent one another. This provides a continuous surface for the wheeled carriage to travel over, the spacing between the wheels 16, 17 of each pair of wheels being such that one or other of the wheels will be on a full section of rail at all times. Additional preferred features are urethane coated wheels, tapers at the ends of the rails and guide rollers (86-89, Fig. 4) on the carriage having vertical axes adapted to roll against an inside vertical face of each rail. |
