Rail vehicle position detection and identification method

The position detection and identification method involves using an electronic data processor (9) onboard a rail vehicle, coupled to an electronic position location unit (8) receiving global positioning satellite signals. The detection unit is also coupled to a signal line extending along the length of the train for receiving code signals identifying each rail carriage (4,5). The rail vehicle has a mobile communication unit (13,14) for communication with a mobile communication unit (24,25) connected to a central data processor (23) via data telegrams. The data telegrams contain the train position and identification codes.
