The collection unit is an armoured cabinet (1) housing several cradles (8) carried on an endless chain (6) which is advanced step-by-step by a drive motor. An access door (2) permits introduction of a box containing a customer's valuables into an empty cradle (8A). A bar code reader (12) verifies that the number carried by the box is identical with the number on a magnetic card which the customer has inserted. The endless chain advances one step to make the full box inaccessible, and to present an empty box in front of the access door. The number of this empty box is written to the magnetic card in readiness for the next use of the unit by the customer.
