The belt conveyor has a sling for holding up the belt, and an assembly for clamping the belt against the sling supporting the belt lower surface. The clamping device is suspended and can pivot freely in the direction of conveying. The minimum distance of the clamping device from the belt sling is equal to the thickness of the belt. The sling (3) includes a bar positioned across the width of the belt, with a support surface parallel with the belt. Mounted above the beam is a clamp (24) which is positioned across the belt and is hinged to the suspension at each end. The clamping device (24) has a contact surface which is as wide as the beam.
