In a procedure for the controlled addition of a medium for the reduction of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas form an internal combustion engine, the quantity of the reduction medium removed from a storage device (5) is measured and compared with the dosing value determined by a control unit (15) in the form of momentary values or projected values integrated over a pre-set time interval. If a deviation between the two is sensed as a result of the comparison, a fault signal is generated. Also claimed is an arrangement for controlling the addition of the reduction medium to the gas, which includes a storage device (5) for the reduction medium and a control unit (15).
