The unit for transport of sheet-metal workpieces with a large area before, between and after forming stages of presses is characterised by the following facts: (a) for each transport step there is provided a workpiece pickup element which for support is hinge-connected at its ends to pivotable links (3, 4) whose length is variable by means of a drive; (b) the axes of rotation of all links are horizontal and perpendicular to the workpiece transport direction; and (c) orientation of the workpiece pickup element about this direction is effected by one or more links in such a way that - independently of the length of these links - their pivot motions are compensated and, if necessary, an active pivot motion can be initiated.
