The endoscope has a flexible working tube (12) with a biocompatible elastomeric outer layer (38). The working tube (12) has a vapour barrier (42) between the outer layer (38) and the enclosed inner space (20) to prevent vapour, which has crossed the outer layer (38) from the atmosphere, from penetrating into the inner space (20). This avoids any reaction between the vapour and substances in the inner space which might produce products harmful to the elastomeric layer.
