A system of powdered colourants useful as pigments is claimed. The pigment system is based on 113 natural minerals which are tabulated with an identifying number, the name of the mineral, the colour in the solid state, the colour in the powdered state and the place of origin. Each of these 113 basic minerals may be subjected to a mechanical treatment (milling, mixing, etc.), thermal treatment (heating, calcination), chemical treatment (reaction with acids, ammonia or other chemical reagents), physical treatment (irradiation with UV, IR, gamma rays, etc.) or a combination of these treatments to modify the colour if necessary, and two or more of the optionally modified minerals may be blended to produce the desired shade of pigment. A table is presented of 1667 specific pigment formulations based on the 113 listed basic minerals, together with details of any modifying treatments carried out, and covering the whole spectrum of colour from pure white through ivory, cream, lilac, violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, rose red, red, beige, brown, grey, and black to very deep black.
