An optical brightening agent contains one or more spiro compounds of formula (I), in which K<1> and K<2> are identical or different conjugated systems and psi stands for C, Si, Ge, Sn or Pb. These optical brightening agents are characterised by high fluorescence quantum yields and a high temperature resistance.
