PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simply obtain a new perfume having a new characteristic fragrance and useful for cosmetics, etc., in a high yield by deacetylating a specific butyrolactone. SOLUTION: A compound of formula I (R1 , R2 are each a 1-12C alkyl, a 2-11C alkenyl, allyl, methallyl, etc.,), e.g.α-ethyl-α-prenyl-γ-butyrolactone. The compound of formula I is obtained by deacetylating anα-acetyl-α-substitutedγ-butyrolactone of formula II in the presence of an alkali metal alkoxide and subsequently isolating and purifying the producedα-substitutedα-buturolactone of formula III with a /R2 halide, especially an aryl halide, etc.
