The device has a unit with holder for a label end and a cutter, and an actuator to move the unit relative to the container parallel to its longitudinal axis. There is an additional actuator to rotate the container about its axis. The movements of the two actuators are coupled mechanically and/or via a control unit. The cutter consists of a conventional razor blade.
