Ceramic-like inorganic/organic composite materials (M1) comprise the following components :(A) reinforced mixture of a ceramic-forming agent which undergoes a substance conversion below the ceramic sintering temperature, pre-compacted to facilitate a solid state reaction ; (B) inorganic ceramic-forming agents containing or modified with reactive surface groups, especially hydroxyl groups ; and (C) organosilicon compounds. Components (A)-(C) are active during the solid state reaction. Standard auxiliary agents and techniques for ceramics are used to mould (M1). Fibrous needle-shaped inorganic crystals are present as fibres in (M1), along with inorganic substances that are capable of forming a liquid phase to create a three-dimensional amorphous network. These inorganic substances may be ones that have reaction products capable of forming such a liquid phase. The amorphous network may be formed with the assistance of (C). Also claimed are (i) similar composite materials (M1) in which the inorganic fibres are replaced with organic fibres containing or modified with reactive surface groups, especially hydroxyl groups and (ii) the preparation of (M1) and (M2).
