Plastics sleeve for protecting buried pipeline

The pipeline (3) may be used to transport oil, gas, water or steam for district heating. The pipeline may be surrounded by a protective outer pipe (2) where it passes through a hill or a bank of earth (1). The ends (4,5) of the protective pipe may project some way beyond the sides of the hill. There are supports (8,9) for the pipeline in trenches (6,7) on either side of the hill. There are one or more sledges (10) with wheels (11) to support the part of the pipeline lying inside the protective pipe. Each sledge may be pulled into position in the pipe by a wire (12) wound in by a winch (13). Added protection may be added to the pipe in the form of a plastics band (15) which passes through a winding device (14). The plastics band curls to form a protective sleeve surrounding the pipeline inside the protective pipe.
