PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide such a magnetic recording medium that a high output is obtd. while suppressing increase in noise during storage in a short wavelength recording with <=0.8μm center recording wavelength which is required for a small-size high picture quality video tape and the like. SOLUTION: In this magnetic recording medium used for information recording with <=0.8μm center recording wavelength, and having a magnetic coating film on one surface of a supporting body and a back coating layer on the other surface, the magnetic coating film contains both of a metal magnetic powder having <=0.2μm major axial length and an inorg. powder having >=5 Mohs' hardness and is formed to <=3μm thickness, and the back coating layer contains a carbon black as primary particles or aggregates having a larger diameter than the major axial length of the metal magnetic powder above described. The medium is rolled with the back coating layer inside around a hub and housed in a cassette body of an ABS resin containing a pigment having 2 to 4 Mohs' hardness.
